Save Water – Save Money

1. Take shorter showers.

You will save money on water usage and the cost to heat the water. Try using a timer to shorten your shower, even a minute makes a huge difference. If someone is resistant, make it a game to see who take the quickest shower.

2. Shower heads

A water saving, shower head saves up to one gallon of water per minute. Try your local hardware store, most all of them sell water saving shower heads and they are usually easy to install.

3. Bring toilets up to code

If you can afford it, replace your old toilet with a new, 1.6 gallon model. Money tight? Fill a one liter, plastic bottle with water and put it in your toilet tank. Remove the paper label of course. If your toilets are flushed an average of four times a day, that's 1460 liters which is about 385 gallons of water saved in one year! And that's only four flushes a day. Yay, one more bottle out of the landfill.

4. Leaky toilets

Fix it quick, it can waste up to 100 gallons per day. Let that go for a month and you’ve wasted 3000 gallons of water. Talk about flushing money down the toilet. You may want to try a HydroRight Dual Flush Toilet Converter to stop the leak and cut down on water usage. That’s a two for one special.

5. Fix the faucet

A leaking faucet wastes up to 50 gallons per day. That’s one thousand five hundred gallons per month. Yikes.

6. Fix the faucet again

Make sure you have an aerator on your faucets. An aerator saves up to a gallon per minute.

7. Sweep your sidewalk

Clean you sidewalk and patios with a broom, not the hose. A hose uses about 10 gallons per minute. A broom uses zero gallons per minute. Zero is better.

8. Outdoor water

Check your watering times on the drip irrigation timer. Cut back watering times a few minutes and see how the plants are doing. In winter, plants definitely need less water. You can also buy rain sensitive timer that will shut down the system when it is raining.

9. About that drip

A drip system uses water only where it is needed. It controls water usage, so if it is set properly, you save water. And it saves you time because it waters for you.

10. Landscaping

Desert landscaping uses 15 gallons per square foot less.

11. Harvest the rain

Catch the rain water and use it to water your plants.

12. Water pitcher

A water pitcher in the refrigerator saves water over waiting for the tap water to run cold.

13. Speaking of tap water

Turn off the water when you are brushing your teeth or shaving.

14. Maximize your washer

Wash full loads of laundry when possible. Some of the older machines use the same amount of water no matter the size of the load.

Newer machines may adjust the water usage, but hey, you still use the same amount of electricity. So, full loads can save money on water and electricity.

15. Now maximize your dishwasher

Using the light wash cycle on your dishwasher saves you about 10 gallons of water. If you use the dishwasher daily like I do, you will save about 300 gallons of water per month. Also, only run a full dishwasher and you will save money on water usage and electricity. Electricity? Yep, because you are using it less often.
