From Main Gate Square West of the University of Arizona Campus you will find the West University Neighborhood. This is considered to be the first suburb in Tucson north of the Southwestern Railroad. Basalt from nearby A-Mountain was a popular building material and architectural styles include Neoclassical, Gothic Revival, Art Deco, Craftsman and Prairie style homes including 50 homes designed by Tucson Mayor and architect, Henry Jaastad.

The neighborhood developed in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s and has evolved into a historic downtown neighborhood and center for Art, culture, Education and Entertainment. The University of Arizona brings several museums and art galleries to the neighborhood including The University of Arizona Museum of Art, Arizona State Museum, UA presents and Centennial Hall as well as The Arizona Historical Society’s Arizona History Museum.

In 1980, a majority of the buildings and homes were entered in the National Register of Historic Places becoming the largest historic district in Arizona. The Modern Street Car runs through the neighborhood and connects students as well as visitors and residents to downtown the Mercado
