Let’s talk about Anello Pizzeria located in beautiful Downtown Tucson on 6th Street. I recently got to sit down and talk to the owner Scott about the story behind Anello. You know Darren and I love to support local businesses whenever possible and let me tell you that Anello is as local as it gets.

The Background of Anello

Scott has a story that I think many of us can relate to, have you ever held down an office job while dreaming of something else? So did he. His dream happens to be about making amazing pizza, so after talking with his family he made the leap, and Anello Pizzeria was born!

Family is actually the heart of this business, Scott gives a lot of credit to friends and family for helping him along the way to making this dream a reality. In fact, Anello is Italian for “promise.”

The Pizza

At the base of this amazing creation is the homemade sourdough crust upon which everything else sits. What’s everything else you might be asking. Well, that would be farm-fresh ingredients from locally sourced suppliers here in Tucson.

Once pie assembly is done it’s thrown into a 100-year-old wood fire oven and baked to perfection. It’s authentic, it’s rustic, it’s Anello! They also have a great local wine selection to pair with your pizza.

The Neighborhood

Location matters and this pizzeria has a great one! It’s close to both 4th Avenue and Congress Street. Nearby you’ll also find Crooked Tooth Brewing as well as Tap & Bottle. It would also be easy to hop on the streetcar and head to the University of Arizona if you feel like it.

Wherever you decide to go, we think Anello is a great place to start or end your evening.

Have a great day,
Tony Ray

Hi, everybody! I’m at one of my absolute favorite pizza places in town and it’s right off of 4th Avenue and Sixth. That’s Scott in the back, the amazing pizza maker and I’m going to talk to Scott in just a second and you got to find an ANELLO, it’s just amazing and it’s about as authentic as it gets. So, let’s go talk to Scott!

Tony Ray Baker
So Scott how to how’d you get into all this?

Scott Girod
I’ve been cooking pizza for over 10 years.

Tony Ray Baker
Yeah, what was the drive? Like, how did you know you were going to do pizza?

Scott Girod
That’s life. Life takes you through a journey and kind of I’m at a pont that I don’t want to do office work anymore. And I’ve always loved working in kitchens and I went back to kitchen after leaving the offices. And I want to pursue the true pizza and that led me to Chris Bianco and Pizzeria Bianco. He showed me be a better way, a new way to make real food. So yeah, we just love cooking, sourdough natural pizza, using the produce around Arizona. So all organic and locally sourced place.

Tony Ray Baker
It’s awesome. Would you say so, It’s like really authentic Italian, or how would you describe it?

Scott Girod
I would describe it as a Tucson restaurant, we are using Tucson produce. We use all sourdough is our bread. So, in a sense, again, we’re a restaurant, but our main thing is good sourdough baked pizza.

Tony Ray Baker
And the method, you know, it feels like to me, you’ve gone back in history with this.

Scott Girod
I mean using were using the source from old ovens. This maker who made, Stefano Ferrara has been around for over 100 years, his family making these Wood Fired ovens. It’s beautiful. It’s very rustic. Yeah, live-fire like cooking on the coal-roasted and burnt and things like that. But you know, sourdough is simple, we try to like we’re finally making it up and now it’s a little bit can be a little messy. Yeah, it’s beautiful. I think you’re going to return to an old way of cooking but modern.

Tony Ray Baker
Yeah, it’s beautiful. It feels it just feels so rustic and authentic in here, too. Yeah, so Scott tell us your address.

Scott Girod
222 East Sixth Street and 6th Avenue, right next to Crooked Tooth Brewery, Arizona Ave..

Tony Ray Baker
And how did you come up with the name?

Scott Girod
ANELLO? Anello is a ring. It’s a promise, chain, so lots little connotation. It’s a promise to my family, they helped me do this. They helped support me on this journey to make this place and believed in me to provide for my little boys. Everybody. And you know, we’re all part of a chain too. We’re a Community Place. Oour food is from Tucson, Arizona. So it’s all just a chained together.

Tony Ray Baker
That’s making me teary-eyed right now. That’s the most awesome story ever. I love the name Anello now..Now I get it. I Never got that piece. But wow that’s amazing. All right, and is there a phone number to call if they want to call in for like to pick up pizza or bread ahead of time?
